about

Boreen was formed in Hamburg in 1995 when Jane O'Brien met fiddle player Heike Prange through an ad Jane had put in a local paper. Heike brought along local musicians Zuchi (Reinhard Zuch) on guitar and cittern and Gregor (Ernst Griegoleit) on flute, button accordion, tin whistle and harmonica and the band played their first gig under the name "The Wooly Jumpers". With the addition of Ulrich Kluber on uillean pipes and low whistles they "upgraded" to "Boreen". This name echoed their choice of material - rousing, whimsical or haunting songs and tunes from the celtic traditions of Ireland and the wider British Isles that brought thousands of fans and concert goers on a journey through the highways and byways and of course boreens (Irish gaelic bóithrín=tiny road) of tradition folk landscapes.

The hallmark of "Boreen" was that they never served the standard "Irish pub fare" of popular drinking songs. Instead they selected and imaginatively arranged an eclectic mix of slow and fast love songs, full of yearning for lost lovers who left too soon or lament for husbands who returned too soon, mixed with rousing sing alongs, foot tapping dance tunes or haunting slow airs. Their arrangements made full use of the wide range of instruments played by these five very talented musicians as well as the haunting and passionate voices of Jane O'Brien and Reinhard Zuch.

They played the mainly north German circuit for seven years favoring festivals and cultural centers rather than the "Irish Pub" scene and gathered an extensive fan base.

They recorded "Enchanted Ways" in 1997 with the producer Jan Grohmann Falke and guest musician Thomas Breckheimer on the celtic harp.

about

Jane O’Brien Hamburg, Germany

Dubliner Jane O'Brien cut her teeth in Barcelona as a singer in an all female acapella band. She began writing songs in earnest in Hamburg where she has lived and played for many years. The yearning soul in her voice comes from her Irish folk roots (Boreen) but the warm velvet overtones arise from her jazz diva alter ego. (Jane O'Brien and Band, S.T.A.R.) ... more
